A taste of tapas

We arrived in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, late Sunday 18 August. After checking into chic U232 Hotel we set out to explore ‘the best city in the world’ … according to our concierge.

We spent the afternoon window shopping along Passeig de Gràcia, marveling at Gaudí’s unique architecture, strolling the tree-shaded central walkway of La Rambla and enjoying views out over Port de Barcelona.

In the evening we sipped on cocktails among locals in Gràcia and tried our first Pisco Sour before turning it in for an early night.

We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast at our hotel on Monday morning before setting off for a day of hillwalking in Montjuïc.

The weather was hot, hot, hot and we occasionally made use of the outdoor escalators as we climbed the many stairs up to Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. From the museum we then walked through the site of the 1992 Olympic Games and the Jardí Botànic de Barcelona to the summit of Montjuïc.

A one time fortress, Castillo de Montjuïc offered magnificent views out to sea and over the city.

We took a series of cable cars to return to the waterfront and relaxed on the beach for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

In the evening we hosted friends from Melbourne at our hotel before heading out for tapas and a few drinks in Gràcia.
